What People are Saying About Sarah
“I first met Sarah Poff in my role as Collections Manager at the National Frontier Trails Museum. I have spent my entire career as an historian working in cultural institutions and historic sites, promoting and protecting America’s history. In the course of my work, I have met many individuals who have an interest in and a passion for American history, but Sarah stands out. Sarah has found an exciting outlet for her passion for history as a multimedia storyteller. She uses her talents as an artist, teacher, and public speaker to share American history with a variety of audiences from elementary students to nursing home residents. She teaches on a number of topics including the Discovery of America, the American Revolution, the Lewis & Clark expedition, Western migration, the Civil War, the Underground Railroad, women’s rights, and the 9/11 attack. She uses a combination of history, culture, storytelling, and art to create an interactive, hands-on experience. I have a deep respect for Sarah as a fellow historian.”

“In my role as the Educational Programming Coordinator at the State Historical Society of Missouri and as the coordinator of National History Day in Missouri, I worked with Sarah Poff for the Historical Society’s ‘Little House Life’ day event. The goal of the event was to give Missouri children a glimpse into pioneer life. She helped the children create rag dolls and marble bags out of cloth and even showed the kids how to churn their own butter—all activities that pioneer children, such as the famous Laura Ingalls Wilder, would have done themselves at some point in their lives. Sarah’s enthusiasm for history and learning made this, by far, our most popular history outreach event. Sarah is able to present history in a non-intimidating, accessible way to diverse audiences. Children not only get to learn facts about America’s past, but also get to actively engage in history by participating in hands-on activities.”

“It has been my distinct pleasure and privilege to have worked with Sarah Poff over the years. My background has involved many local and national historic groups, including the National Santa Fe Trail Association, the National Frontier Trails Museum, and the State of Missouri Historical Society. I have worked with Sarah on many projects at the National Frontier Trails Museum, where she has provided detailed programs for both adults and children on the history of our historic trails and life on these trails. Sarah’s deep love for and understanding of American History, along with her unique abilities to present it to persons of all ages endears her to our historic community.”

“In my role as both a parent and president of the Chapel Lakes Parent Teacher Association, I had the pleasure of working with Sarah Poff for many years. Sarah, in her role as the Art teacher at Chapel Lakes Elementary School, did an amazing job, researching history and incorporating that historical perspective into all the art projects she taught her students. In addition, the Chapel Lakes PTA sponsored a national award-winning program of historically themed holiday parties throughout the school year. Sarah, as the teacher liaison for the program, developed celebrations that included the American historical perspective—for example, our fall program that focused on pioneer days and allowed students to experience life in the days of the pioneers. Students were encouraged to dress in pioneer attire, ate foods appropriate to the day, played games played by pioneer children, made pinch pot bowls out of clay, and rode in a covered wagon around the school grounds. As both teacher and artist, Sarah has influenced the lives of thousands of children, helping them to experience and understand America’s past.”

“Sarah Poff has a true love for art that shows in everything she does, and that love for art is contagious. I have had the pleasure of having Sarah work with my daughter in the art classes that she offers through the Community Education Program. It took only one class for my daughter to fall in love with Mrs. Poff—from how she ‘dresses like an artist’ to her energy, to the great rapport she built with my daughter. Not only is Sarah a master in her field, she is a natural who aspires to create a love for art in others.”
